Tima Kurdi was born and raised in Damascus Syria and immigrated to Canada in 1992. In September 2015, a personal tragedy struck Tima’s family – her brother, Abdullah, lost his wife, Rehanna, and two boys, Alan and Ghalib Kurdi, while trying to cross from Turkey to Greece. The picture of Alan Kurdi, The Boy On The Beach, woke the world up to the plight of Syrian refugees escaping their country and brought international attention to the Syrian refugee crisis. Since then, Tima has felt compelled to step into the media spotlight to voice her grief and outrage, and to encourage citizens around the globe to open their hearts and their doors to refugees. The raw eloquence of her message resonated around the world, leading to speaking tours in Europe, Canada and US, to plant a seed and call to action in the hopes that this tragedy can be resolved. To keep her nephew’s memory alive, she and her brother Abdullah opened the Kurdi Foundation to help children affected by war, to provide them with education, medication, food, clothes. Tima is the author of The Boy On The Beach.
