Ebony Ava Harper is one of two known black trans women working in philanthropy in the US. She has given nearly her entire adult life to community service, starting as a teenage volunteer for the Los Angeles Youth Network, beginning in 1995. In the twenty-two years since, Ms. Harper’s tireless commitment to public service and her values of acceptance and inclusivity have allowed her to come through time and time again for Northern and Southern California community organizations. Children Of The Night in Van Nuys, CA, is a nonprofit focused on rescuing America’s children from the ravages of human trafficking and prostitution. It was here that Ebony learned community-based outreach and how to apply her lived experience as a Peer Counselor, helping homeless youth going through many of the same disadvantages and tribulations as she had gone through during her youth. Today, Ebony Harper is one of the leaders and shining lights of CA, as Program Associate with The California Endowment. Her recent appointment to CA Dept of Health Planning Group reflects her vital and respected role in California as a go-to contact for a broad range of needs and services, from Heads of State-level agencies looking for her to speak at a program unveiling to religious community leaders seeking Transgender cultural competence to survival sex workers in crisis needing a shoulder to cry on and resources to get them through to tomorrow.
